Don’t Sell in Social Media Unless You Want to be Ostracized!July 20th, 2010
Social media is a place to make connections…not the sleazy used car dealer to sell at!
I’m sure you’ve seen it…the streams of pitches by one person telling you constantly all day and all night what they can do for you and why you need to be on their list or buy their product or work with them. Funny thing here…that seems to be all they post…not information you can use right away, or engaging conversations to get to know you better.
When all you do is pitch your stuff you will be ostracized quickly.
People want to make connections, have fun and learn useful information. They do NOT want to log in to their account and see a stream of sales pitches. This is the fastest way to get them to stop following you on Twitter or NOT be your friend on Facebook.
Sales has a time and place and social media can help with sales but it is not a classified ad!
When done right, social media will sell for you but it will be done by relationship building and making new connections, not by pitching your product or service to everyone that happens to come across you.
I have seen very successful business people build their business in social media. They do this by interacting and getting to know their followers. They send personal messages to people, remember their birthday or special occasion and acknowledge it. They get their followers interacting online with each other and them and they LISTEN to what their followers are saying.
By really paying attention to interactions you are gaining valuable information because people are offering to you exactly what they need so you can go out and create it. Then when you have that new product or service created and are offering it, you gently tell your followers about it. Don’t pitch them…let them know in conversation that you created what they are seeking and where to find more information.
I can be sure that your followers are then going to check out what you have and probably purchase it or choose to work with you because you have gained their trust and they know you are a real person that cares about helping others!
People buy from people they know, like and trust. Social media is your outlet to get known, make friends and gain trust. From there people will decide if they need what you are providing and it will be a natural sale, not one that feels forced!
